ALPHA PHI CHAPTER

CHAPTER HISTORY

The History of Alpha Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.™

Founded on January 28, 1927, at Clark University (now Clark Atlanta University) in Atlanta, Georgia, Alpha Phi Chapter is a distinguished undergraduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Established during a period of tremendous growth for the Fraternity, the chapter has remained steadfast in its commitment to developing leaders dedicated to scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

The foundation of Alpha Phi Chapter can be traced to the fall of 1926, when James P. Brawley and Edward Luther Brookes organized the Oasis Club on the campus of Clark University. The Oasis Club was formed to unite young men who embraced the ideals and aspirations of Alpha Phi Alpha and desired to establish a chapter on campus. Providing guidance, mentorship, and unwavering support throughout this effort was Matthew Simpson Davage, whose leadership proved instrumental in bringing the vision of Alpha Phi Chapter to fruition.

The Oasis Club’s seven hopeful members—Horace Carroll, DeWitt Dykes, Marquis L. Harris, Edward L. Lipscomb, Jasper Nelson, Hosea Nyabonga, and Arthur Weems—became the chapter’s first initiates, laying the foundation for a legacy that has endured for nearly a century.

Since its founding, Alpha Phi Chapter has developed generations of accomplished leaders in education, business, government, ministry, law, medicine, and countless other professions. Through an unwavering commitment to scholarship, servant leadership, and community engagement, the chapter has faithfully upheld the Fraternity’s motto, “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All,” leaving an indelible mark on Clark University, the Atlanta community, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

As Alpha Phi Chapter celebrates its Centennial, it proudly honors the vision of James P. Brawley, Edward Luther Brookes, and Matthew Simpson Davage, while paying tribute to its first initiates whose courage, commitment, and brotherhood established a tradition of excellence that continues to inspire generations of Alpha men.
